Fly On The Wall - Update On What The Committee Is Up To

Reporter: Barry Lewis

The committee meeting held at the end of August was bracketed by two events which largely determined its agenda: the special meeting held in late July and the forthcoming AGM (7th October at Chill Factore).

Away from the pressures of "routine business" the July special meeting allowed for more wide ranging discussions, involving both committee and other club members, and proved a fruitful source of comment and ideas. Communication within the club and with the outside world, allied to the image we present, were key issues as we, in common with many other clubs, compete to engage more effectively with existing and potential members.

The range of activities we currently support and the partnerships we have forged or attempted to forge over recent years were reviewed critically to assess at what level, if any, they should be continued.

The final stage was to identify a number of specific ideas for the committee to pursue as well as agreeing a set of more immediate priorities: including more use of electronic communication; furthering active partnerships with those bodies having a natural affinity with our core activity, skiing. This makes our Chill Factore activities more attractive to a wider range of people; and improving our financial position through changes to subscription rates and charges and subsidies for activities.

In setting up the special meeting the committee had agreed that all these topics, whilst perhaps not the most original, require review from time to time and all within the context of our finances and where we aim to be in three to five years time. The immediate results approved at the late August committee meeting include the subscription and rule changes dealt with in the AGM papers, intended links with Sale Sports Club and Manchester Cross Country Ski Club, and greater use of electronic medium for communication and promotion.

Approaches will also be made to Chill Factore to explore extending our activities there and first steps have been taken to provide for those wishing to join up with our holidays after the initial allocation of accommodation has been taken.

As part of its more regular business the committee approved the arrangements for the forthcoming AGM. In particular the Members' Forum will be reintroduced whereby members can put questions/points of view to the committee outside the formal business of the AGM. It is the belief of the committee that OUR club is on the move, it is succeeding. Whether you agree or disagree, come and have your say and offer your support. It is not too late to stand for the committee! AND all those attending the AGM will automatically be entered in a draw for a Simply Piste £50.00 voucher.
